a day with the girls!

After a long day at work, my blogger bff Nicole sent me the best text ever “come meet us at the pool”. I was so happy and immediately headed home to change and head to The Riviera.

I met up with Nicole and her friend Chasity at the pool. The pool had fun music and everyone there looked like they were having the time of their lives.

Yes, sometimes I do selfie. Especially when I have gorgeous friends.

After some great pool vibes, I had to check out the gorgeous room Nicole and Chas were staying in for the weekend.

I was obsessed with the décor of the room and how much The Riviera has changed. I remember visiting Palm Springs as a kid and it was so outdated. They’ve made it fit perfectly with the midcentury theme of the desert.

The girls invited me to hit dinner with them with two new friends from Miami that they met at the pool. We then met up with Ana (who is also a fashion blogger… small world!) and her high school BF Katie. Katie brought her sweet baby Vienna (I hope I spelled it right). We hit the hot spot Trio and had great girls talk at the table.

Such an amazing day with great friends and new friends! Isn’t that what life is all about.

my culture is not a costume.

today’s post will a little out of my norm, but this is an important issue i’d love to speak on.

DSC_0163 DSC_0166It’s summer time, which means my braids are back! It’s too hot to manage my hair and braids make my mornings much easier. Lol. With braids come lots of questions, especially by people of other races. I know typically it’s from true curiosity about my hair, but sometimes it can be borderline offensive.

I know it’s not the norm to be able to change the style of your hair very often, but as a black woman that is something that I can do and love about my hair. Asking to touch my hair is a major NO NO! I am not an exhibition or a pet so touching my hair is a true insult. It may not seem wrong to want to touch hair, but think about someone came up to you and asked you that.

With that, asking if my hair is…. my hair is probably the most hurtful question. Like… why just why? Lots of women wear extensions and I wouldn’t dare other woman if her hair was hers or an extension, because it really isn’t business.

As women, I think we pride in our looks and I know I can be sensitive to unwanted criticism and questions. I think as women when we meet other of various cultures, we should look at them with an open mind and think fully before asking questions on their looks. DSC_0128 DSC_0129DSC_0135

Thank you all for listening to my rant!

Anywho, My look was on the run for errands and lunch of my girls. I recently bought this top from Nordstrom Rack and I am madly in love the pattern. It has a great ethic look to it and the colors pop very well on my skin. I paired my blouse with my favorite Jimmy Jimmy boyfriend jeans from Paige Denim. To dress my look up from my normal casual style, I “borrowed” my moms classic open toe Lanvin pumps.

My Fourth of July Essentials

Tomorrow is the fourth of July which means lots of food, alcohol, and time with family. Here are my essentials to make it through this holiday weekend:

DSC_0072

  • Denim (shorts): this weekend is typically hot and denim shorts are always my go to! They are always so easy and can go with any look that I want.
  • Converse: You will most likely spend lots of time on your feet or walking while out this weekend. Converse are super versatile and can help you make it through the day, while still look chic. I recently bought my mom these Andy Warhol x Converse low tops and they are twist on red, white, and blue.
  • Alcohol: Yes, this is the biggest necessity. (Not too much though!)
  • Bandana: I love bandanas to shield the sun from my face or to keep me cool. They are stylish and have purpose.

Have a safe and fun fourth of July weekend everyone!

Color Blocked.

This was the last look Nicole collaborated on at The Saguaro. This time we utilized the color walls for great color blocked shots. When we were brainstorming this look, we both found shots against the colorful walls and just knew that had to be a backdrop.

I styled my color block look with a turquoise and white hounds tooth jumpsuit by Michael Kors. The print of the jumpsuit played well in contrast to the wall and helped me still pop against it. I kept my look retro with my oversized pearl necklace and Louis Vuitton wedges.

Nicole styled herself with this boho chic look. She wore a printed tribal maxi from Forever21 with a Michael Koru belt. Then coordinated her accessories with a brown clutch and wedges. I loved how our looks differed, but it showed our personal style.

We had lots of fun shooting on various hotel balconies… hopefully no one were in the rooms while we were shooting. If they were, I’m sure they had fun watching us.

Nicole had a gorgeous boho chic look with her maxi dress and wedges.

#trappedinbirkenstocks

Happy Thursday! Are all of you posting #tbt photos today? lol I definitely have a throwback for you all… Birkenstocks! Yes, the “Jesus sandals”! I remember in middle school all the girls in school had them and I REALLY wanted a pair too. I maybe wore those like 5 times… smh. Well Birkenstocks have reappeared in my life and I am OBSESSED. They are so comfortable and really make any look casual chic. (I might be stretching it with that, but I just really like them.) This will definitely be my summer essential sandal this year.

Because i’m happy…

Why am i happy? I’m on day 5 of my jucing challenge with my mom and i’m still going strong. The past few days have been very tough & i’ve relized that it’s best for the first week to add one small meal in. But today I feel amazing!!
I think my oufit definitely shows with the new Ralph lauren sweater my mom found for $25 and i layered my chambray button up underneath. Since the polo man on the sweater is purple, i paired it with my silk Kate Spade skirt…
I had bryce shoot my look and we had fun with lots of candids..

Route 84

I purchased this adorable sequin jersey tank from Forever21 and haven’t wore it. I saw it hanging in the closet and just knew I had to throw it on! I styled it to dress it up since it is a tank. Even though sequins don’t really need much dressing up…
I keep the look very simple with jeans a black leather jacket. I chose my black patent pumps to keep it classic! I was Christmas shopping for my coworkers and lucked upon this silver sequin clutch at Target for $10….yes, TEN DOLLARS! I intented on giving it as gift and then decided I couldn’t let it go…lol
